CNN and anchor Jake Tapper are reeling after a Florida jury delivered a stunning verdict in a defamation lawsuit filed by Navy veteran and former military contractor Zachary Young. The two-and-a-half-year legal battle ended with the jury awarding Young $5 million in damages, a figure expected to rise significantly with punitive damages still pending.
The case stemmed from a 2021 investigative report by Tapper, which accused Young of engaging in questionable activities during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Tapper’s report alleged that Young was orchestrating refugee exfiltrations through “a black market full of promises, demands of exorbitant fees, and no guarantee of safety or success.” These accusations were slammed by a judge in October and ultimately dismantled during the trial.
