Maher Stuns Fans With Trump Praise!

“Everything I’ve not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent. At least on this night, with this guy,” he told the audience during his opening monologue.

Far from being an uncomfortable encounter, Maher said the dinner was surprisingly relaxed and respectful. He described Trump as someone who listens, someone who asks questions, and most astonishing of all—someone who laughs, often at himself.

“I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump,” Maher added. “Make of it what you will.”

What began as a dinner turned into something of a peace summit. Maher even brought a printed list of Trump’s past insults directed at him—a cheeky move only Maher could pull off—and presented it to Trump. Trump didn’t lash out. Instead, he laughed and signed it.

Bill Maher has dinner in the White House with President Donald Trump, Kid Rock and Dana White on March 31, 2025.

“I brought this to the White House because I wanted him to sign it, which he did … with good humor,” Maher recounted, holding up the list on-air.

To Maher’s credit, he didn’t change his opinions on Trump’s policies or leadership on the global stage—but he made it clear that behind the cameras, there’s a different man than the one portrayed by mainstream media.

“Look, I get it. It doesn’t matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian. It matters who he is on the world stage. I’m just taking as a positive that this person exists,” Maher said. “Because everything I’ve ever not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent at least on this night with this guy.”

According to Maher, Trump was more engaged and present than many of the so-called elite figures he’s met over the decades. Maher contrasted Trump’s conduct with that of prominent political figures who often come across as disconnected or disinterested.

“I’ve had so many conversations with prominent people who are much less connected, people who don’t look you in the eye, people don’t really listen because they just want to get to their next thing… None of that was him,” he said. “And he mostly steered the conversation to ‘What do you think about this?’ I know, your mind is blown. So is mine.”

And what did Maher take home after this unexpected evening?

“Hats and a very generous amount of time and a willingness to listen and accept me as a possible friend, even though I’m not MAGA, which was the point of the dinner.”

It’s rare to see a public figure break rank with their ideological camp, especially on a platform as large as Maher’s. But in this case, honesty won out over partisan performance.

Whether or not the left will forgive Maher for saying something positive about Trump is yet to be seen. But one thing’s for sure—Bill Maher didn’t lie. He just told the truth that millions weren’t ready to hear.
