Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) makes a startling observation in his final remarks, removing the mask. Speaking to an esteemed group of wealthy donors, he concedes that the public views Democrats as more diverse than his party, which does not have as much diversity in its membership.
McCarthy made a striking impression when he spoke at the Oxford Union Society, touching on a variety of subjects like American interventionism and the impending 2024 presidential contest. The California Republican recently made headlines in Washington when he abruptly announced that he would be retiring in January and stepping down from his position. “When you look at the Democrats, they actually look like America,” McCarthy started before turning his fire on his colleagues. “When I look at my party we look like the most restrictive country club in America.”
The liberal audience responded to the quip with sporadic applause and laughter.

The Oxford Union, a group connected to Oxford University in the United Kingdom, hosted McCarthy for a provocative discussion titled “This House Believes US Interventionism Has Done More Harm Than Good.” The former Speaker of the House answered questions about his controversial invitation to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, which strained relations with China, and his decision not to offer unrestricted support to Ukraine during his time in the House.
Recalling that “this house has more faith in him than the previous one,” the hosts could not help but make fun of the Republican who had just been ousted from office, according to the Oxford Student. They also hinted that he would not be speaking of the house again for a while.
Transatlantic relations between the United States and the United Kingdom have been significantly impacted by the ongoing conflicts in Israel and Ukraine. But domestic worries have surfaced as Republicans voice doubts about the substantial amounts of money being transferred to Ukraine, which is still struggling with Russia’s annexation of its territory.
