KEY STATE SHOCKER: Democrats Flip, Join Republican Wave!

A worrying trend for President Joe Biden is that Democrats in a crucial swing state are progressively defecting to the Republican Party.

As per Newsweek, “the most up-to-date voter registration data from the Pennsylvania Department of State shows that 35,589 registered Democrats have switched to their party affiliation of Republican this year, as of December 18, 2023. Comparably, 15,622 registered Republicans have switched their party affiliation to Democrats. There were also 20,908 former Democrats and 18,927 former Republicans who are now unaffiliated with either party.”

The publication also stated: “The departure of voters and the net loss of 19,967 Democrats signals bad news for Biden, who only won Pennsylvania by some 80,000 votes in the 2020 election.”

In an interview with Newsweek, Erik Telford, senior vice president of public affairs of the Commonwealth Foundation, stated: “Current voter registration trends and polling in Pennsylvania should be setting off alarms for President Biden and Democrats at the state and national level, with pocketbook issues remaining the top concern of voters who overwhelmingly feel that things are headed in the wrong direction.”

According to a Commonwealth Foundation study conducted in December, Biden’s popularity rating among Pennsylvania voters has continuously stayed in double-digit negative territory into 2023. In this year’s monitoring, his disapproval rating peaked at 61 percent.

In Pennsylvania, Democrats have a better popularity rating for Biden than do Republicans, but it is still lower than the national average. Democrats nationwide give Biden a 78 percent approval rating, according to a recent Gallup poll.

While the majority of voters are unsure, one in three support Biden for the 2024 election.
In the approaching 2024 race, almost thirty-three percent of registered voters are supporting Biden, according to a recent Commonwealth Foundation study. But the survey also revealed that a staggering 46% of participants are apprehensive about supporting him in the general election—a figure that even includes members of the Democratic party, where 15% said they would be unwilling to do so. Who will receive your vote? The contest is still far from over.

A startling 75% of Pennsylvania Democrats said in a recent Emerson College study that they would never support Joe Biden against former President Donald Trump in the next election. A startling revelation emerged from the survey, though: 10% of Democrats declared they would cast their ballots for Trump, while 30% remained unsure. As the political situation changes, keep an eye out for updates.

“With 20 Electoral College votes—the fifth most of any state—Pennsylvania is a critical state in presidential elections. Only twice between 1932 and 1988 has a presidential candidate been able to win the White House without carrying Pennsylvania, and no Democrat has been elected president without the state since 1948,” Newsweek noted.

Pennsylvania was crucial in the 2020 election, as it was in 2016, the year Trump destroyed the Democratic Party’s illustrious history in the state. This time, Biden led the charge by conducting a thorough campaign in Pennsylvania and effectively flipping a number of counties that had previously supported Trump. Furthermore, Biden beat Hillary Clinton in Trump-leaning districts, garnering a sizable amount of support from suburban voters. (Refer to Newsweek)

Allegheny, Bucks, and Westmoreland—important counties in Biden’s 2020 victory—saw a sharp drop in Democratic Party support. According to polling data featured in the paper, 3,817 Democrats changed their party identification to Republicans in Allegheny County alone, which includes Pittsburgh.

In Bucks and Westmoreland counties, more than 1,100 Democrats made the decision to switch to the Republican party.

“If I were involved in the Biden campaign, I’d be asking a lot of questions and doing all in my power to reverse this trend,” The outlet was informed by political consultant Jay Townsend. “Biden does not have to win every swing state, but he can ill afford to lose Pennsylvania. Every vote will matter.”

Professor of politics at the University of Pennsylvania Daniel Hopkins, who focuses on state politics, warned Newsweek that Biden may suffer consequences if he rejects the most current polling data and ignores persistent patterns in voter registration. “Own peril and have a significant impact on down-ballot races.”
