FBI Director Kash Patel turned a tense Senate hearing into a political firefight after challenging Senator Chris Van Hollen to take an alcohol screening test “side by side” during a heated exchange that left Democrats scrambling for control of the narrative.
What began as a routine budget hearing quickly spiraled into one of the most explosive confrontations Capitol Hill has seen this year.
Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hauled Patel in Tuesday to grill him over allegations published by The Atlantic accusing the FBI chief of excessive drinking and erratic workplace behavior.
But instead of backing down, Patel detonated the hearing with a direct counterattack that instantly shifted the spotlight onto Van Hollen himself.
The Maryland Democrat opened his questioning by citing claims from the controversial magazine article, which alleged Patel had experienced “bouts of excessive drinking” and unexplained disappearances that reportedly concerned colleagues.
Patel immediately rejected the accusations.
