Emotions ran high outside a Texas courthouse after the grandmother of convicted killer Karmelo Anthony was captured on video denouncing the justice system moments after a jury handed down a lengthy prison sentence in one of the state’s most closely watched criminal cases.
Anthony, 19, was sentenced to 35 years behind bars after being found guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of high school athlete Austin Metcalf. The verdict brought a dramatic courtroom chapter to a close, but the scene that unfolded afterward quickly drew attention online.
As she exited the courthouse in McKinney, Texas, Anthony’s grandmother, Toni Hayes, was surrounded by supporters who voiced anger over the outcome of the case. Video footage showed Hayes leading chants directed at the court system while making her way to a waiting vehicle.
Witnesses recorded Hayes repeatedly shouting, “Racist! Biased! Prejudiced!” as supporters echoed the chant around her. The demonstration continued as she entered her car and prepared to leave the area.
