Other disputed claims included dismissing reports of pets being eaten by illegal immigrants in Ohio, denying the authenticity of footage that appeared to show House Speaker Nancy Pelosi taking responsibility for the January 6 Capitol protests, and insisting that Trump lost every court case following the 2020 election. Gutfeld contended that the moderators’ fact-checking lacked credibility and was designed to discredit Trump while shielding Harris from scrutiny.
Gutfeld also noted that Kamala Harris was given a free pass on several points that have long been discredited. One of these included her claim that police officers died on January 6, which has been refuted. She also repeated the widely debunked “very fine people” hoax and accused Trump of supporting a nationwide abortion ban, a position he has not advocated. According to Gutfeld, Harris’ statements were allowed to go unchecked throughout the debate.
On an episode of The Five, Gutfeld aired his grievances about the debate. He remarked on how the American people were the real losers in this debate, calling the moderators “idiots” for their biased approach. “Well, I don’t know who won but I know who lost it was the American people. You know, you could say if you complain about the refs you’re losing. Well, if the refs are corrupt, you’ve got a complaint because everybody lost,” Gutfeld said.
Gutfeld, who has never shied away from calling out perceived media bias, took it a step further, dubbing this event the first “DEI debate.” For Gutfeld, this reflected a complete abandonment of impartiality and fairness. He argued that the debate was set up so that Harris was held to virtually no standard, while Trump was scrutinized under a microscope, making it impossible to fairly judge who truly won or lost.
“I honestly don’t know how anyone can decide who won the debate. That’s like trying to guess the price of a painting that you suspect is a forgery. You can’t objectively decide a winner in a sham competition. This is truly the first DEI debate where one candidate was subjected to a high standard and the other was held to no standards at all,” Gutfeld stated, underscoring his frustration.

In a final swipe at the integrity of the debate process, Gutfeld contended that the removal of fairness from the proceedings rendered the entire event pointless. “They removed the essence of fairness to achieve an outcome that could not be scored. You cannot score that. That is why you can’t say who won or who lost. A liberal should be ashamed that your candidate needed the odds to be stocked so heavily in their favor,” he added.
Gutfeld’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within conservative circles that mainstream media has repeatedly shown bias against Trump, and that this debate was just the latest example of media outlets tipping the scales. While debates are meant to inform voters and allow candidates to present their views, Gutfeld believes the American people were robbed of a fair chance to hear both sides equally. His scathing assessment of the ABC-hosted debate is likely to resonate with Trump’s base as the 2024 presidential race heats up.
