This was a pivotal moment. Polls, such as one from Fox News in August, showed that 73% of voters believe Kamala Harris was fully aware of Biden’s cognitive issues. Many viewers expected a straightforward answer from Harris, but instead, she responded with a carefully crafted defense. “Joe Biden, I have watched from the Oval Office to the Situation Room, and he has the judgment and the experience to do exactly what he has done in making very important decisions on behalf of the American people,” she said.
Rather than addressing the question directly, Harris seemed to rely on well-worn talking points about Biden’s experience and leadership, leaving Baier and the audience without the clarity they sought.
Baier wasn’t done. He pressed Harris further, asking, “There were no concerns raised?” Instead of offering a clear response, Harris attempted to divert attention away from Biden’s cognitive state and toward Donald Trump. “Bret, Joe Biden is not on the ballot . . . and Donald Trump is,” she replied.
But Baier continued to press, asking how Harris could have regularly met with Biden over the last several years and not noticed any cognitive decline. “You met with him at least once a week for three-and-a-half years. You didn’t have any concerns?” he questioned.
At this point, Harris fully abandoned the Biden-related question and instead launched into a diatribe against Donald Trump, calling him “unfit and dangerous” and referencing several national security officials who had criticized Trump’s time in office.
“I think the American people have a concern about Donald Trump,” Harris began. She went on to assert that numerous officials who had worked closely with Trump had spoken out against his leadership, including his former Vice President, Mike Pence. “That is a fact,” she concluded emphatically.
For many, Harris’ refusal to answer Baier’s questions directly was telling. By focusing on Trump, Harris avoided addressing the issue of Biden’s mental fitness—a subject that continues to concern a significant portion of the electorate. Her inability to give a clear answer only served to fuel speculation that she had been covering up for Biden’s cognitive decline.

What’s more, Harris’ strategy of pivoting to attacks on Trump did little to calm fears about her own judgment. As the sitting Vice President, Harris is expected to be in the loop regarding the President’s health, particularly as Biden is the oldest sitting president in American history.
While Harris never directly acknowledged any issues with Biden’s cognitive abilities, her avoidance of the question spoke volumes. In the eyes of many viewers, Harris’ refusal to confront the topic was as good as a confession. By not addressing Biden’s mental decline head-on, Harris may have inadvertently confirmed the very concerns she sought to dismiss.
As the 2024 election draws nearer, voters will undoubtedly continue to scrutinize Biden’s cognitive health—and by extension, Kamala Harris’ role in defending it. For now, this interview with Fox News has only deepened those concerns and left many wondering whether Harris truly has the ability to lead should she be called upon to do so.
