U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has no intention of stepping down from the nation’s highest court, despite circulating rumors and calls from political circles urging him to consider retirement.
“Despite what some people may think, this is a man who has never thought about this job from a political perspective,” said a source close to Alito. “The idea that he’s going to retire for political considerations is not consistent with who he is.” According to insiders who spoke to the Wall Street Journal, these speculations are not grounded in any concrete plans by the 74-year-old conservative justice.

Legal activists had speculated that Alito might consider retiring while a conservative president could nominate a younger judge to secure the court’s current conservative tilt for future decades. The election of Donald Trump in the previous week has only amplified these conversations, as his administration would have the power to replace any Supreme Court vacancy without Democratic input, due to Republican control of the Senate and White House.
