A tragic and deeply disturbing scene unfolded in northern Idaho, where firefighters answering a routine call found themselves the targets of a ruthless ambush that has left two men dead, one critically injured, and a tight-knit community in shock.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office confirmed late Sunday that the man suspected of gunning down the firefighters was discovered lifeless on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. A firearm was reportedly found close to his body, according to ABC News.
Sheriff Robert Norris delivered the chilling details in a press briefing, describing the assault as a sudden and calculated strike.
“This was a total ambush,” Norris said. “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
Authorities say the chaos erupted after a seemingly harmless brush fire report rolled in around 1:21 p.m. local time on Sunday. But within forty minutes, that call for help transformed into a full-blown shooting scene, as the unsuspecting firefighters came under attack from an armed gunman.
