According to Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), the demands made by House Republicans to fortify the southern border constitute “one of the most dangerous moments” that he has seen since winning office.
There is a barrier to President Biden’s request that Congress adopt a massive $100 billion foreign aid package, of which $60 billion is specifically earmarked for Ukraine. Republicans in the House are refusing to give Ukraine any more help until significant sums of money are allocated to solving the situation at the southern border. This conflict aligns with a concerning increase in unauthorized border crossings, which is expected to reach a record-breaking 3.2 million apprehensions in 2023.

Murphy, who is leading his party’s Senate negotiations on the foreign aid package, stated on Meet The Press that this week will see a greater level of involvement from the Biden White House in the talks. “Of course, when you’re talking about something as complicated as border security, you need the White House engaged, because you need to know whether they’re gonna sign the bill, and you need to understand how the changes you’re making are going to be implemented at the border,” he said.

Murphy continued by saying that Republicans’ abandoning their demands in the next 48 hours would determine the “fate of the world.”
“Well, I’m not paying attention to the politics here What I know is that the future of the world is at stake if we fail. If Republicans don’t get reasonable in the next 24 to 48 hours, Russia is going to march in Ukraine, China is going to be a green light to invade Taiwan,” Murphy made this allegation following anchor Kristen Welker’s observation of the public’s resounding opposition of Biden’s border policy. “The world for my children is fundamentally different under that scenario. The United States security is at risk. So I am just by myself.”
In closing, he charged Republicans with “playing games with the security of the world.”
