In a dramatic turn of events, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly fled to Russia after opposition forces seized control of Damascus, marking the collapse of his regime. The swift advance of the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Al-Qaeda offshoot, led to Assad’s removal, leaving Syria’s political future in turmoil.

Late Saturday night, opposition forces broadcasted from Syria’s state television, announcing Assad’s ousting. Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali confirmed the fall of the government shortly thereafter, urging military units to surrender peacefully. Al-Jalali pledged cooperation with opposition groups to ensure a stable transfer of power, emphasizing the need for unity during the transition. “He and other members of the former government will recognize whichever leader is selected by the Syrian people,” reports stated.

Initial reports suggested that Assad might have met a tragic fate when his aircraft vanished from radar near Homs on Saturday night. However, speculation about his plane being shot down diminished after no crash site was identified. By Sunday afternoon, Russia’s foreign ministry released a statement confirming Assad’s departure. “Assad had decided to leave the presidential post and left the country, giving instructions to transfer power peacefully,” the statement read.
