The FBI found itself at the center of controversy following revelations that it was authorized to use deadly force during its raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in August 2022. This authorization emerged from court documents unsealed by Judge Aileen Cannon on Tuesday, linked to prosecutor Jack Smith’s case concerning classified documents.
The documents disclosed that the directive for the use of deadly force came from the highest levels, sanctioned by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. Reports from the scene described FBI agents, armed and ready, potentially confronting not just the former President and his family, but also the Secret Service personnel stationed there.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, the FBI defended its stance, asserting that the deadly force authorization was merely standard protocol. They stated, “The FBI, like other law enforcement agencies, requires the team leader of any search warrant or arrest warrant to complete a standardized form known as an ‘Operations Plan.’ This form, which also must be read by the team leader to all assisting agents, is a reminder of the FBI’s deadly force policy.”
