>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

The announcement included touching photographs of the judge both in his courtroom and with his family, offering a glimpse of the man behind the robe.

Remarkably, just one day before his passing was made public, Judge Caprio himself recorded an emotional video message from his hospital bed, once again turning to his followers for prayer. “Last year I asked you to pray for me, and it’s very obvious that you did because I came through a very difficult period,” he said. “Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital now, and I’m coming to you again, asking you to remember me in your prayers once more. I’m a great believer in the power of prayers. I think the one above is looking over us. So remember me, please.”

His family also shared their gratitude for the outpouring of support. In a Facebook post, they wrote: “Judge Caprio wishes to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your prayers, love, and support while he is in the hospital. Your kindness and encouragement mean the world to him. He and his family are deeply grateful.”

Judge Caprio’s career stretched nearly four decades. He was first appointed to the bench in 1985 and continued until his retirement in 2023. What began as a local judgeship turned into national recognition when his courtroom show Caught in Providence gained widespread popularity. Running from 2018 through 2020, the program was nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards, including three for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program. Caprio himself received a nomination for Outstanding Daytime Personality.

But more than accolades, it was his humanity that captured hearts. Millions shared viral clips of his rulings online, admiring the way he blended justice with mercy. In one unforgettable moment, Caprio dismissed a traffic case against a 96-year-old man who had been caught speeding in a school zone while rushing his cancer-stricken son to a medical appointment.

In late 2023, Judge Caprio made public his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. At the time, he was candid with his supporters, acknowledging the seriousness of the illness: “The report was not a good one. I have been diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, which is an insidious form of cancer.”

Yet even then, his faith and hope never wavered. “I’m being treated by a wonderful team of doctors, both here in Rhode Island and at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts,” he explained. “I pray that God guides their thoughts and their hands in their treatment of me.”

Judge Caprio leaves behind his wife, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His impact will continue to echo in the millions who were inspired by his example of compassion, fairness, and faith.

At a time when many Americans have grown skeptical of the justice system, Judge Frank Caprio reminded the nation that kindness and justice do not have to be strangers. His legacy will be remembered not only in Rhode Island but in every corner of the country where his words and actions brought comfort, encouragement, and hope.
