House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has suggested that House Republicans may support legal challenges if the Democrats attempt a last-minute replacement of President Biden on the 2024 presidential election ticket. Johnson’s remarks came during an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper, where he discussed the potential legal hurdles Democrats might face if they decide to switch their nominee late in the process.
As a former litigator and constitutional attorney, Speaker Johnson emphasized the complexities involved in changing a party’s nominee close to an election. “Democrats are looking into potential legal hurdles to replacing their nominee so late in the process,” Tapper inquired. Johnson responded, “Look, I’m a former litigator, you know a constitutional attorney. I’d just made note in some uh… comments of the last week that they have real problems.”

Johnson explained that each state has its own election system, which could pose significant challenges if the Democrats attempt to replace Biden or Vice President Harris at the top of the ticket. “I mean, every state has their own election system, that’s our constitutional system, that’s the way it’s done. And in some of these states it’s a real hurdle, they have a real problem of replacing the nominee at the top of the ticket.”
