At the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Sustainable Development Impact Meeting, former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made a startling admission that has left many conservatives deeply concerned. In his comments, Kerry essentially claimed that the First Amendment, the bedrock of free speech in the United States, poses a significant challenge to government authority, particularly in the digital age.
During the meeting, Kerry expressed his frustration with the current state of free speech, especially on social media platforms, arguing that the freedom to express diverse opinions online hampers the government’s ability to steer public consensus. He remarked, “I think the dislike of and anguish over social media is just growing and growing and growing, and that’s part of our problem particularly in democracies — in terms of building consensus around any issue, it’s really hard to govern today.”

Kerry’s remarks seemed to suggest that the unrestricted flow of information online has disrupted the traditional control that governments once had over the narrative. For decades, mass media outlets often served as gatekeepers of information, but with the rise of alternative news sources and social media platforms, people now have more access to diverse perspectives and opinions. Kerry lamented this shift, stating, “The referees we used to have to determine what’s a fact and what isn’t a fact, it kind of, you know, been eviscerated to a certain degree.”
