Everyone was shocked by the answer John Fetterman gave.

John Fetterman engaged in a lively discussion with Scott Detrow of National Public Radio following his historic comeback to the Senate.

Lt. Gov. Fetterman’s near-fatal stroke in May of last year rocked Pennsylvania and made it clear how severe the issue was; the effects of the stroke were felt for months as he spent 44 days in the hospital getting therapy for clinical depression related to his health scare.

In the interview, Fetterman was open and honest about his struggle with depression and how it affected his capacity to function well in the Senate. He also disclosed that, as part of his path to recovery, he had spent time in a hospital.

“When I was in the throes of depression, to be 100% honest, I was not the kind of Senator that was deserved by a Pennsylvanian,” Fetterman stated.

Detrow tried her hardest to ignore Fetterman’s sadness, but she was powerless. Instead of spending the necessary time for a full recovery, he decided to get back into campaigning, which was costly and made his health worse.

“I want to use the rest of the interview to talk about what comes next and talk about how you’re going to approach your job now that you’re back in the Senate. And I wanted to start by just taking a moment to ask you about some of the criticism and also some of the concerns. You said yourself a moment ago that, when you were depressed, you didn’t feel like you were the Senator that Pennsylvania needed — I’m paraphrasing. But, the central attack against you during the campaign was you couldn’t do the job due to your health problems. Then you got here, and you had to spend six weeks in the hospital. And I’m wondering, do you feel, yourself, any extra pressure at this moment to say, hey, Pennsylvania, I’m here to represent you?”
Detrow asked.

Depression affects everyone, regardless of party, according to Fetterman, who noted that mental health is a topic of considerable discussion in the US. He stressed the necessity and relevance of addressing this issue as a single, united nation.

“Yeah, certainly. And, — but I bet you some of those people that are criticizing me know somebody, or they might be someone that faces depression in their lives as well. And I just always try to tell people by saying it’s not a Democratic or a Republican area. It’s humanity. And, there [are] people from — no matter where you live, no matter what your political views are — is that you suffer from depression, or you know somebody there,” Fetterman added.

Critics have engaged in spirited discussion on Fetterman’s health, in part because of the dearth of information and media bias.

Due to an ongoing medical problem, Fetterman has had long-term depression. He persists bravely and with resilience in the face of difficulty.

NPR and other media organizations are not pressing Fetterman’s medical staff for interviews or commentary in response to the stroke he experienced. For the time being, this leaves open-ended questions regarding a full recovery.
