While Hurricane Helene ravaged states like Georgia, Harris was seen attending a high-profile fundraiser in San Francisco, further fueling criticism of the administration’s disconnection from the suffering on the ground. “Biden was lounging around on the beach when big parts of our country have been devastated by that massive hurricane,” Trump charged during his speech.
To add insult to injury, Trump himself had already visited the devastated regions in Georgia, helping to hand out supplies and offer aid to those in need. Many have pointed out the parallels to President George W. Bush’s infamous response to Hurricane Katrina. The media widely criticized Bush for what appeared to be a detached and indifferent reaction when a photograph surfaced of him gazing out of Air Force One over a flooded New Orleans. Now, some are wondering why the same scrutiny isn’t being applied to Biden and Harris.
Vice President Harris’ attempt at damage control only worsened the situation. She posted a photo on X, formerly known as Twitter, aboard her plane, supposedly overseeing the federal response to the hurricane. However, the image showed Harris scribbling on a blank sheet of paper, with earbuds connected to a phone sitting unused on the desk before her.
In the post, Harris claimed, “I was just briefed by [FEMA director Deanne Criswell] on the latest developments about the ongoing impacts of Hurricane Helene.” She went on to mention a conversation with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, stating, “Our Administration will continue to stay in constant contact with state and local officials to ensure communities have the support and resources they need.”

The staged photo, however, was hard to ignore. The empty gestures came across as performative and hollow, drawing the ire of Americans who felt the administration was more concerned with optics than actual action. The media, which famously skewered Bush for his Katrina response, has been noticeably silent about the blunders of Biden and Harris, leading many to accuse the press of covering for the administration to shield Harris from electoral consequences.
As Americans continue to struggle in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the lack of leadership from the Biden administration has left a bitter taste. Many are left asking, where is the empathy?
