Then, by comparing it with numerous other digitized papyri, we deciphered it letter by letter and quickly realized that it could not be an everyday document.”
The experts believe that the papyrus might have been part of a writing exercise within a school or monastery, suggested by the uneven handwriting and inconsistent formatting of the text. Despite the initial oversight, new technological advancements facilitated the accurate translation and comparison of this document with other early Christian texts.
The backstory of how this papyrus found its way into the library remains unclear, with no solid evidence of its discovery or acquisition. “Apart [from] what can be deduced from the general history of the collection, there is no evidence of how or when the papyrus was discovered,” Berkes and Macedo remarked.
As for the future of this ancient document, Dr. Macedo informed the Daily Mail that he and Dr. Berkes plan to publish a critical edition and commentary on the manuscript. Their ongoing research aims to further analyze and contextualize the style and language of the Gospel of Thomas text. Their findings are anticipated to be published in the prestigious Journal of Papyrology and Epigraphy.
