And yet, the legislation President Trump signed to reopen the government was essentially identical to what Democrats rejected before the shutdown even began.
Vance laid out the Democrats’ damage in plain terms:
“Here’s what the Democrats actually accomplished,” he explained. “They caused a lot of stress for our troops. They made our air traffic controllers not get paid. They caused a lot of flight cancellations. They had a lot of people thinking they weren’t going to get their food benefits. All for literally nothing.”
Democrats refused to budge because they wanted last-minute Obamacare subsidies restored—something that had nothing to do with the shutdown itself. They held out, demanded concessions, and gambled with people’s livelihoods.
And they lost.
The final agreement—funding the government through January 30 and extending SNAP benefits through September 2026—did not include the health-care giveaway Democrats insisted on for six weeks. Their big “win” evaporated, leaving only a trail of political embarrassment.
Inside their own party, tempers flared as the pressure mounted. For many Democrat voters, the stunt backfired. Lawmakers began publicly demanding that Chuck Schumer step down as leader after the prolonged shutdown delivered absolutely nothing.
Vance credited the small group of moderate Democrats who eventually broke with their leadership:
“I do give a lot of credit for the moderate Democrats in the Senate who were with us from the very beginning,” Vance said. “Privately, the Democrats would recognize the position of their far left was crazy. But they all feel a little bit like they’re being held hostage by their far left.”
As Vance put it, the motive behind the Democrat resistance was never about policy—it was about political revenge.
“They don’t care if the troops don’t get paid,” Vance said. “They don’t care if you cause billions of dollars of lost productivity. They don’t care if your shut down the airline industry… They don’t care if they have to burn the entire country down in order to get Trump.”
The evidence? Democrats rejected the same funding bill back in September—even though three of their own senators had already supported it. They continued blocking it week after week, plunging the shutdown into historic territory.
By the end, Vance argued, the shutdown effectively ended Chuck Schumer’s political stature in Washington. It showcased the Democrats’ priorities in a way Americans won’t forget.
“What an incredible juxtaposition of priorities,” Vance said. “We care about Americans. They care about illegal aliens, that’s been true for years. They made it super clear with this government shutdown fight.”
President Trump also weighed in, praising the administration’s steady handling of the crisis.
“The president of the United States said every day eventually, the Democrats are going to realize this was an absurd position, we’ve got to reopen the government and that’s what they did,” Vance said.
After 43 days, Democrats walked away with zero concessions and a lot of angry constituents. Federal workers went unpaid. Flights were delayed nationwide. Food assistance hung in limbo. And for what?
To score political points—and fail.
Americans watched closely. They won’t forget who put them through this nightmare for absolutely nothing.
For those Democrats that voted in favor of opening the government which shows they have common sense and they put the citizens of the United States first. If and when any of those should run for re-election, vote them back in because they voted to end the Shameful Schumer Shutdown.
As for the other Democrats that voted to keep the government closed, be sure when they go for reelection you vote for anyone else other than them because they don’t stand for the citizens of the United States.
