According to senior Trump administration officials and allies close to the case, federal investigators spent nearly a year building evidence behind the scenes before a grand jury handed down felony indictments.
And now the political establishment is panicking over what could come next.
The former FBI director posted the now-infamous image during a beach walk in May 2025. The photo showed shells carefully arranged into “86 47,” a phrase many interpreted as a coded message targeting the 47th president of the United States, Donald Trump.
Comey quickly removed the post after outrage exploded online. He later claimed he had no idea the numbers carried violent political meaning.
