During the 2020 election, Tapper went after Lara Trump on air, accusing her of being heartless for stating the obvious—Joe Biden was not mentally fit. Tapper, like many in the media, absurdly claimed Biden’s mumbling and blank stares were merely signs of a childhood stutter, not cognitive decline.
But that infamous clip has now resurfaced in light of Tapper’s new book, and it’s not aging well.
While promoting the book, Tapper was confronted about his past treatment of Lara Trump. In a stunning admission, Tapper said:
“She was right and I was wrong. I did not see, in the moments he was having, I did not see that as cognitive decline. She did. Our reporting suggests that she was correct. So I feel humility. I have apologized to her.”
Appearing on Fox News with Laura Ingraham, Lara Trump confirmed that Tapper called her directly before the book’s release.
“Yeah, Jake Tapper called me about two months ago, actually. And he said, ‘I have this book coming out, and I know everybody’s saying that I should apologize to you. I plan, whenever the book comes out, to go on TV and I will say, ‘You were right and I was wrong,’” Lara Trump said.
She acknowledged the apology, but didn’t let Tapper—or the media—off the hook.
“And I guess to Jake’s credit, he did that. Now, Laura, I think the overarching thing here, though, is that the damage is done, right? We were so close to something so dangerous happening to this country. I mean, look at what actually happened. Look at the millions of illegal immigrants able to pour in. People are questioning now, you know, who was actually in charge of this country?” she continued.
Lara Trump wasn’t bitter, but she made it clear the apology, while appreciated, came far too late to undo the consequences.
Despite Tapper’s public mea culpa, Original Sin is already facing backlash. The biggest issue? The book fails to address how the media played a key role in covering for Joe Biden’s obvious decline. It was the press—CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, and others—that ran interference, silencing critics and branding truth-tellers as conspiracy theorists.
Without acknowledging that massive failure, critics say Tapper’s book is nothing more than a well-dressed excuse, aimed at salvaging the reputations of those who willingly misled the American people.
Jake Tapper may have finally admitted the truth to Lara Trump—but for many Americans, it’s too little, too late. The damage has been done, and the media’s complicity in hiding Biden’s condition can’t be scrubbed clean with a single apology.
The American people deserved honesty in 2020. Instead, they got gaslighting from an elite press corps that wanted one thing above all: to defeat Donald Trump. Now the consequences are unfolding in real time, and no book tour can change that.
