A House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday spiraled into chaos after Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) delivered a blistering rebuke of former Special Counsel Jack Smith and sharply criticized former Capitol and DC Metropolitan Police officers connected to January 6.
The hearing, originally intended to spotlight Smith’s testimony, quickly turned into a flashpoint as Nehls warned that a newly formed January 6 Select Committee will finally conduct a serious investigation into what actually happened that day.
Front and center in the hearing room were former DC Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, along with former U.S. Capitol Police officers Aquilino Gonell and Harry Dunn. The officers were invited by Democrats and seated prominently to lend credibility to Smith’s narrative and reinforce accusations against President Donald Trump.
Instead, the moment exposed just how fragile that narrative has become.
As Nehls laid out his case, Fanone visibly lost control.
During Nehls’s remarks, Fanone interrupted from the audience, muttering, “Go f*ck yourself,” attempting to mask the outburst with a cough. Moments later, when House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan attempted to restore order, Fanone again interjected, appearing to cough the word “bullsh*t.”
