Newly unsealed court documents have revealed disturbing new details about the mindset and intentions of the man now accused of planting pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters just hours before the January 6 Capitol riot.
According to federal prosecutors, Brian Cole, a Virginia resident arrested on December 4, admitted during an extensive post arrest interview that he intended for both explosive devices to detonate. His statements directly contradict years of speculation that the bombs may have been symbolic or designed merely as a diversion.
The filing paints a picture of a man who prosecutors say became consumed by online political content following the contentious 2020 election, even while claiming he was not politically aligned with either major party.
Cole initially denied any involvement, investigators said, before ultimately confessing after hours of questioning. He reportedly told authorities that he does not view himself as overtly political, but that online forums and videos left him convinced that something was deeply wrong with the system.
