The world woke up to staggering news on the day after Easter — Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and a global religious icon, has passed away at 88. And for Vice President J.D. Vance, who was in Rome with his family at the time, the loss struck home in a way no one could have anticipated.
Vice President Vance had been traveling overseas with his wife Usha and their children to celebrate Easter in Vatican City. The family attended Mass, even sharing a private moment with Pope Francis — a meeting that would tragically become one of the Pope’s final official acts. Vance learned of the Pope’s death shortly afterward, and it clearly shook him.

“I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul,” Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter).
