America is finally breaking up with the penny.
In a long-overdue move, the U.S. Treasury has placed what it expects to be its final order of copper blanks—bringing the era of the one-cent coin to a close. According to a recent report from Reuters, the department plans to stop releasing new pennies into circulation early next year.
And frankly, it’s about time.
Trump Slams Penny Waste
President Donald Trump, never one to shy away from calling out government waste, made his position crystal clear.
“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation’s budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.”
