California’s controversial governor Gavin Newsom has finally dropped the act. After years of denial and political gamesmanship, Newsom admitted in a new interview that he does plan to seek the presidency in 2028 — a move many conservatives predicted long ago.
During a sit-down on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Newsom was asked directly if he intends to run for president. His response was blunt: “Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” he said. “I’d just be lying. And I’m not — I can’t do that.”
With that statement, Newsom became one of the first major Democrats to openly acknowledge a 2028 White House bid. His remarks come after years of speculation and mounting evidence that he’s been quietly laying the groundwork for a national campaign.
While Newsom has publicly insisted that he’s focused on California, his actions tell another story. In recent years, the governor has embarked on a whirlwind tour across several battleground states — including South Carolina, the first primary contest in the Democratic calendar. Political insiders say it’s no coincidence that he’s spending so much time there.
