According to Fox News, renowned Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, often known as “The Merchant of Death,” has declared his candidacy for a government position in Russia. As part of a prisoner swap involving WNBA star Brittney Griner, Bout, who was captured in Thailand in 2008 and served time in the US, was released by President Joe Biden in December 2022. At 56 years old, Bout has positioned himself to the right of United Russia, the party of President Putin, by joining the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Notably, Bout had completed ten of the 25 years of his sentence.
The LDP does not support democratic or liberal ideas, despite its deceptive moniker. The party was well-known for its ultranationalistic and antisemitic rhetoric, which had a great impact on the Russian populace. It was led by its late founder until his death last year. The LDP was the largest party in the Russian legislative elections of 1993, winning an astonishing 23 percent of the vote. However, the LDP’s standing has declined to that of a minor party for the 2021 parliamentary elections.

Bout was detained in Thailand in 2008 and later found guilty in a US court of planning to kill Americans and providing weapons to terrorist groups. At the time, Russia rejected the accusations as “baseless and biased” and asserted that the United States was targeting the arms trader of Tajik ancestry for political reasons. It was thought that Bout served as the model for Nicholas Cage’s 2005 movie “The Lord of War.”
Brittney Griner, an American who was swapped for Viktor Bout, was given a 9-year term by a Russian court for illegally possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis. Mr. Bout talked about his time in an American jail during his initial interview after returning to Russia. He stated the opinion that Nazis who fled to the US during Operation Paperclip had an impact on the US penal system. Bout also praised President Putin in the course of the conversation.
When Bout was apprehended, DEA Chief of Operations Mike Braun remarked, “Bout was a master…There was no one who came close to his ability to move any type of armaments around the world and deliver them with absolutely precision, with air drops, landing on unimproved air strips, using old Soviet heavy cargo aircraft.”

When the arms dealer was revealed, Braun expected that Bout would return to his old habits and resume trafficking in weapons. Braun reported that “Anyone who thinks he’s washed up and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is not going to push him back into service, it’s beyond me…People who believe that don’t understand how the real underworld works.”
