Iran’s Currency Just Hit Rock Bottom

Iran’s economic crisis is deepening, with the nation’s currency plunging to an unprecedented low as American sanctions and restrictions on its oil trade put mounting pressure on Tehran. The latest financial shock comes as the Trump administration argues that Iran’s shrinking revenue will make it increasingly difficult for the regime to sustain its war effort.

The Iranian rial suffered another historic collapse on Tuesday, falling to more than 2.5 million rials per U.S. dollar in Tehran’s currency markets. The new low marks a sharp deterioration from the previous record of 2.2 million rials to the dollar, established on September 2.

That earlier record lasted just 27 days.

The latest plunge underscores the financial strain facing Iran as the conflict that began in February continues to weigh on an economy already weakened by years of international sanctions. With Washington applying additional economic pressure and targeting the country’s oil trade, Tehran is confronting an increasingly difficult financial situation.
