Iran is demanding major concessions from the United States before it will fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns that the strategically vital waterway could remain restricted despite diplomatic efforts to reach a broader agreement.
Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, announced Saturday that Tehran would not restore normal passage through the strait unless Washington first changes its conduct toward Iran. The announcement comes as efforts to revive a longer-term agreement between the two countries appear to have made little headway.
Zolghadr laid out six conditions that Tehran says must be satisfied before the waterway can fully reopen. His message was blunt: Iran intends to keep the pressure on Washington until its demands are addressed.
