According to Haalvsh, the trouble began at approximately 4 a.m. local time when dozens of Iranian military and security personnel moved into Saravan’s Bakhshan district.
The operation quickly turned violent.
Local sources described explosions and heavy exchanges of gunfire as unidentified attackers reportedly struck at least three vehicles belonging to Iranian security forces.
Roads surrounding a mosque were reportedly sealed off as the confrontation intensified.
The violence then spread toward the Great Madani Mosque and the nearby Jahadabad area, according to the reports.
Ambulances were also seen moving through the area while fighting continued.
Haalvsh sources claimed that dozens of Iranian security personnel were either killed or injured during the confrontation. Those casualty numbers have not been independently confirmed, and official Iranian accounts reported substantially lower losses.
The identity of the armed fighters also remained unclear immediately after the battle.
No organization had publicly claimed responsibility as of the latest reports.
Iranian authorities later acknowledged that a deadly security operation had taken place but presented a different account of the confrontation.
Officials said personnel from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s General Intelligence Directorate, and police forces participated in a coordinated operation targeting an armed group inside Saravan.
According to Iranian state media and statements attributed to the IRGC, authorities believed the suspects had assembled in the area to prepare attacks or assassinations.
The regime claimed three members of its security forces were killed.
Iranian officials also reported that four or five members of the unidentified armed group were killed during the operation.
Authorities said weapons, ammunition, and explosives were recovered following the confrontation.
Deputy Governor Ali Khalilabadi said numerous members of the targeted group had been killed or wounded and indicated that security forces were continuing operations in the area.
The conflicting casualty figures could not immediately be reconciled.
The bloodshed comes in one of the most volatile regions of the Islamic Republic.
Sistan and Baluchestan sits along Iran’s borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan and has repeatedly experienced clashes involving security forces, separatist militants, armed organizations, and smuggling networks.
The province is predominantly home to ethnic Baloch residents, many of whom are Sunni Muslims in a country ruled by a Shia Islamist government.
It is also one of Iran’s poorest and least-developed regions.
High unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, economic hardship, and longstanding grievances against Tehran have helped make the province a persistent security challenge for the Iranian regime.
Among the armed organizations previously active in the region is Jaish al-Adl, which has carried out attacks against Iranian security forces.
Reports in late 2025 indicated that Jaish al-Adl and other Baloch organizations had joined together under a new umbrella organization known as the People’s Fighters Front.
There is currently no confirmed evidence establishing that organization—or any other particular group—as responsible for Saturday’s confrontation.
Saravan itself is no stranger to violence.
Its proximity to Pakistan and location in a region where Tehran has struggled for years to maintain complete security have made it the scene of previous armed confrontations.
Saturday’s fighting also arrives at a difficult moment for Iran’s rulers.
The country continues to face severe economic pressure as U.S. sanctions and related restrictions squeeze Tehran’s access to international financial markets and constrain important sources of revenue, including oil exports.
Iran has simultaneously struggled with currency weakness, economic disruption, shortages, and pressure on ordinary households.
Those nationwide problems can be particularly severe in Sistan and Baluchestan, where poverty and inadequate development existed long before the latest economic pressure on Tehran.
Sanctions have nevertheless made attracting investment and financing major projects even more difficult.
For now, the most important questions surrounding Saturday’s deadly encounter remain unanswered.
Iranian authorities say they disrupted an armed cell preparing attacks. Local reporting paints a picture of a far more extensive battle that may have inflicted significantly heavier casualties on regime forces than Tehran has acknowledged.
With no group claiming responsibility and independent verification from the area extremely limited, the identity of the mystery gunmen—and the true scale of the predawn battle—remains unclear.
