For more than a week, Iran’s aging strongman Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has watched events spin out of his control. At 86 years old, the man who has ruled through fear, prisons, and secret police is now confronting a nightmare scenario every dictator dreads: a nationwide uprising fueled by economic collapse and public rage.
Across Iran, city after city has erupted as ordinary citizens pour into the streets demanding an end to the Islamic Republic. From Tehran to distant provinces, protests have spread like wildfire as the economy implodes. Inflation has soared past 42 percent, the national currency has disintegrated, and families can no longer afford basic necessities.
In a move that stunned even longtime observers of the regime’s incompetence, the government attempted to calm the uprising by offering citizens the equivalent of seven dollars a month. The result was instant outrage—and open mockery.
Regime Announces Embarrassing $7 Handout
Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani appeared on state television Monday to announce what the regime framed as an economic relief plan. Every Iranian citizen, she said, would receive one million tomans per month—about $7—in electronic credit to purchase basic goods.
