Inspector General Revolt: Trump’s Firings Unlawful?

In a stunning rebuke to the White House, a coalition of federal inspectors general has denounced President Trump’s mass dismissal of over a dozen watchdog officials as illegal. The firings, executed abruptly on Friday night, have ignited a firestorm of criticism from oversight officials, Congress, and government watchdog groups.

The Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), representing the federal watchdog community, released a strongly worded letter condemning the administration’s actions. The letter, signed by Hannibal Ware, the inspector general for the Small Business Administration and CIGIE chairperson, emphasized the legal violations involved in the terminations. Ware’s letter advised White House officials to consult legal counsel and warned that the dismissals were insufficient under federal law.

Inspectors General Speak Out

Among the most vocal critics is Mike Ware, one of the inspectors general who was fired. He argued that the firings blatantly violated the law requiring 30 days’ notice to Congress and detailed reasoning for removing an inspector general. “We do not believe the actions taken are legally sufficient to dismiss Presidentially Appointed, Senate Confirmed Inspectors General,” Ware’s letter read.
