The election in question was a tightly contested battle in which incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim, backed by the town committee, narrowly secured victory over State Senator Marilyn Moore by a mere 270 votes. Mayor Ganim emphasized the importance of fairness and integrity in the electoral process, stating, “Whether it’s people accused from the Moore campaign or my campaign — any irregularity is unacceptable. We all agree that the integrity of the voting process is vital to our democracy.”
The arrests reveal a calculated attempt to manipulate the absentee ballot system. According to arrest affidavits, each suspect played a distinct role in undermining the electoral process. Geter-Pataky, for instance, did not properly declare her assistance on an absentee ballot application and advised a voter against casting their vote in person, suggesting she would handle their absentee ballot.
Chief State’s Attorney Griffin expressed his commitment to maintaining electoral integrity, remarking, “I appreciate the attention and time the Statewide Prosecution in Bureau put into these investigations. I hope these prosecutions will send a message that deters tampering with election results in the future in Connecticut.”
Further allegations involve Heredia instructing voters on whom to vote for on their absentee ballots and providing misleading information about eligibility for absentee voting. She acknowledged her failure to submit an absentee ballot distribution list to the Bridgeport Clerk’s Office. Similarly, Castillo faced accusations related to absentee ballot distribution lists and was eventually coerced into admitting his actions.
Edmonds, who was working for Moore’s campaign at the time, was present during the absentee ballot completion process and is accused of taking possession of these ballots and tampering with a witness. In response to these allegations, Senator Moore, who is preparing for retirement, expressed her disappointment, stating, “I ran on integrity and I also ran on integrity for my Senate campaign. That’s what I tried to foster, integrity in all campaigns. That I had a person doing the opposite bothers me, especially knowing who I am and knowing that I don’t cut corners on anything.”
