The controversy intensified after images circulated from Omar’s December 2022 visit to Somalia. During the trip, she was welcomed by top officials, including Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and attended several high-level gatherings.
At one such event, observers noted that Omar was seated in proximity to Morgan. Photos from the occasion, which also included members of her family, quickly spread online and ignited backlash.
Critics seized on the optics, arguing that a person who fled a regime’s violence would not comfortably appear alongside figures associated with it. Somaliland commentators were particularly vocal, with one statement reading: “She’s not escaping the past, she’s returning to it. Royalty among the remnants.”
The situation escalated further after comments from JD Vance, who publicly alleged that Omar may have committed immigration fraud. Speaking on a political podcast, Vance stated: “We actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America.”
He also confirmed discussions with White House advisor Stephen Miller regarding potential legal avenues.
These allegations are not new but have resurfaced with renewed intensity. They center on Omar’s past relationship with Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom critics claim is her biological brother. The claim suggests that a marriage between them may have been used to facilitate immigration benefits.
Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, dismissing the accusations outright. She has called them politically motivated and has accused opponents of targeting her unfairly.
Meanwhile, a House Oversight inquiry led by James Comer is reportedly examining financial questions tied to Omar’s household. Comer raised concerns publicly, stating: “It’s not possible. It’s not. I’m a money guy. It’s not possible.”
Adding another layer, Somaliland officials responded sharply to the renewed controversy. In a post that quickly went viral, they remarked: “Deportation? Please – you’re just sending the princess back to her kingdom. Extradition? Say the word.”
The remark underscored the deep divide in how Omar is perceived internationally versus how she presents herself politically in the United States.
Throughout her time in Congress, Omar has been outspoken on global human rights issues, frequently condemning violence and demanding accountability abroad. However, critics argue she has remained notably silent on the atrocities tied to Somalia’s past regime.
That silence, combined with the images from her Somalia visit, has fueled a growing political firestorm.
Omar continues to reject all allegations, calling them baseless and politically driven. But the questions surrounding her past, her associations, and her public narrative are unlikely to fade anytime soon.
As scrutiny intensifies, one thing is clear: this story is far from over.
