This hostile encounter underscores just how volatile the situation has become for Democrats, who are now facing intense blowback over their handling of the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case—a case they once championed but now seem desperate to distance themselves from.
WATCH:
For months, prominent Democrats have flocked to El Salvador, demanding the release of Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who lived in Maryland with his American wife and children. He was deported in March during a crackdown on suspected gang members, despite previously winning protection from deportation in 2019.
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) led an effort to pressure Salvadoran authorities, traveling to the country and urging Garcia’s transfer from the infamous CECOT prison. Joining the cause were several House Democrats, including Reps. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Robert Garcia (D-CA), and Maxine Dexter (D-OR). Yet, despite their theatrics, they were denied any direct access to Garcia.
The situation grew even more embarrassing after reports surfaced that Garcia’s wife had once filed a protective order—a revelation that clouded the narrative. Although later clarified that the order involved a prior relationship and not Garcia, the damage was already done. The political winds shifted, and party leaders began backing away from the cause they once embraced so loudly.
According to sources who spoke with The Bulwark, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is now quietly urging Democrats to cool their jets. “They want to let the El Salvador stuff slow down,” one senior staffer admitted, signaling a retreat from the high-profile fiasco.
More planned trips are now in limbo. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) had reportedly been preparing to visit El Salvador, but those plans are now uncertain. Espaillat previously vowed, “The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is working all avenues to ensure Kilmar Abrego Garcia rejoins his family and receives his constitutional right to due process.”
However, even within their own ranks, there’s sharp disagreement. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) offered a blunt reality check during an interview with Fox News: “This is not the right issue to talk about due process. This is not the right case.”
Political strategists are waving red flags, warning that dragging out the Garcia case could seriously hurt Democrats, particularly in battleground districts ahead of 2026. “They should understand that what they’re doing is going to be hurting us in the long run,” a concerned House staffer said.

Despite the mounting panic, Garcia’s attorney Chris Newman insists the trips have been worthwhile. “The trips have proven effective both in the efforts to save Mr. Abrego Garcia’s life and to save Democrats from the quagmire they are in on the issue of immigration,” Newman defended.
Yet behind closed doors, Democratic unity is fraying fast. One insider summed it up bluntly: “As a member of a party you need to be disciplined. You can’t take that approach if you’re not having regular communications. You have to be clear in messaging what the plan is.”
If Ilhan Omar’s foul-mouthed eruption is any indication, clear messaging is exactly what the Democrats are sorely lacking.
