In a decisive move in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the brutal October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, has been killed by Israeli forces. Sinwar had managed to evade capture for more than a year, hiding in Gaza, and using Israeli hostages as human shields. According to Israeli authorities, they had tracked Sinwar’s location but faced complications in capturing him due to the explosives rigged in his hiding place.
Sinwar rose to power in Hamas after the Israeli military eliminated his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in August. Known for his ruthless leadership, Sinwar orchestrated some of the deadliest attacks against Israel, and his death is seen as a significant achievement in Israel’s ongoing efforts to dismantle Hamas. Israeli military sources indicated that Sinwar had been hiding in a tunnel deep under Gaza, and his killing marks another high-profile success in Israel’s targeted operations against terrorist leaders.
