As agents moved in, a pack of far-left agitators rushed to intervene. One woman stood directly in front of the officers, trying to block their path and demanding to see a warrant. Another protester physically interfered. One officer responded with a warning that should have been obvious to anyone with a shred of legal knowledge: “Do not touch me or impede me in my lawful duties… There is a crime for you to do so.”
Despite the facts, left-wing voices wasted no time spinning the narrative. One of the loudest came from Nicholas Reppucci, the head of the Charlottesville Public Defender’s Office and Rodriguez’s legal representative. Reppucci, apparently more concerned with shielding illegal immigrants than upholding the law, called the arrest “highly alarming” and described it as a “public policy mistake.”
Reppucci even went so far as to accuse ICE of overreach, saying agents “took over a state agency with federal force.” He claimed the officers failed to identify themselves and never showed a warrant. “I’ve been here since 1999, and I have not seen anything like this before,” he told The Daily Progress.
Let’s cut through the noise: ICE didn’t storm into a courtroom. They waited—outside—until Rodriguez’s legal proceedings had concluded. There were no legal violations, no jurisdictional oversteps. It was a lawful federal arrest carried out by the book.
But logic and law don’t matter much to the radical Left when it comes to protecting illegal immigrants.
The backlash grew even louder when it was revealed that a second illegal alien, also a house painter, was reportedly detained while trying to pay off a fine related to a drunk driving charge. Apparently, even those convicted of endangering lives on the road deserve protection now—at least according to the open-borders crowd.
The Albemarle County Police Department, seemingly wanting no part of the political fallout, quickly distanced itself. Spokeswoman Logan Bogert issued a statement insisting, “Per our existing policy and practice, the Albemarle County Police Department does not inquire into the immigration status of victims or witnesses.”
She added that while the department works with federal agencies like ICE and Homeland Security on major crimes—such as “homicides, sexual assaults, and child exploitation investigations”—they do not participate in immigration enforcement themselves.

Translation: they won’t lift a finger to assist in removing illegal immigrants unless they’re involved in the worst kinds of crimes.
This incident lays bare the dangerous gap between federal immigration law and progressive sanctuary-style enforcement at the local level. ICE is doing its job—quietly, lawfully, and professionally—but it’s met with hysterics and interference from activists and even some public officials who seem more interested in defending lawbreakers than protecting American citizens.
While the Biden administration continues to weaken border security, ICE agents on the ground are left to clean up the mess. And every time they do, the Left treats it like a crime scene. But this time, America saw the footage. And the truth couldn’t be more clear.
