In a move that has stirred considerable controversy, House Democrats are rallying against a Republican-backed bill aimed at tightening voter ID laws. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), which mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for voting in federal elections, is set to be voted on next week.
Stephen Miller, Senior Advisor to President Trump and Founder of America First Legal, took to X to express his shock, stating, “Read the below. Then read it again. A major DC establishment publication says that House Democrats are ‘bringing out the big guns,’ to get illegal aliens to vote in 2024. How can any American support a party that wants to flood the ballot box with illegals?”

The SAVE Act, if passed, would introduce several new requirements for voter registration. Key features of the bill, summarized by Mike Johnson, include:
- State election officials must inquire about citizenship before providing voter registration forms.
- Individuals must provide proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
- A variety of documents will be accepted to make it easier for citizens to register to vote in federal elections.
- States will have access to federal agency databases to remove noncitizens from voter rolls and confirm citizenship for individuals lacking proof of citizenship.
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will determine whether to conduct removal proceedings if a noncitizen is found to have registered to vote in federal elections.
- DHS must notify state election officials whenever an individual is naturalized.
