A New Jersey Democrat who once boasted about standing up to “injustice” now finds herself staring down the barrel of nearly two decades in federal prison.
Rep. LaMonica McIver appeared in federal court this week, fighting a three-count indictment accusing her of obstructing and physically interfering with ICE agents during a chaotic confrontation at a Newark detention facility back in May.
Political Martyr or Lawbreaker?
McIver’s legal team claims she’s being targeted for her politics, alleging the Biden-era Department of Justice is prosecuting her “selectively and vindictively” because of her opposition to Trump-era immigration enforcement. CNN reported that her lawyers insist this is punishment for “clashing with the Trump administration.”
But Judge Jamel Semper wasn’t convinced. While he didn’t rule on her motion to dismiss, he did raise eyebrows at the Department of Homeland Security’s online statements about the incident. Semper called out “fact-free” posts from government officials that could bias potential jurors, noting that some included false claims linking McIver to Antifa and trespassing.
