Horrific Attack on Student Linked to Liberals

French authorities have moved decisively in the wake of a brutal street attack that claimed the life of 23-year-old mathematics student and right-wing activist Quentin Deranque in Lyon. Nine suspects are now in custody, as the case ignites a heated debate over the influence of far-left groups in France.

Deranque succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, two days after prosecutors reported he had been violently assaulted near Lyon’s Institute of Political Studies. The attack reportedly took place amid chaotic scenes linked to a protest, according to TF1 Info.

Prosecutor Thierry Dran described the attack in stark terms, saying Deranque was “kicked and punched” by “at least six” individuals. An autopsy confirmed the young man suffered fatal injuries to his skull and brain, underscoring the extreme brutality of the assault.

The violence appears tied to a demonstration by the anti-immigration feminist collective Némésis, which staged a protest outside a university conference featuring far-left European Parliament member Rima Hassan, Reuters reported. The confrontation has sparked questions about political extremism and campus safety.
