Since that day, significant questions remain unanswered. How was Crooks able to access the rooftops so easily and get within shooting range of the former president? Why did law enforcement fail to take action before shots were fired, despite visible signs of an impending attack? And, perhaps most troubling of all, why was former President Trump even allowed to take the stage without adequate protection in place?
The situation has only worsened with revelations that former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, along with the agency, had repeatedly denied requests from Trump’s security detail for enhanced protection. Agents on Trump’s protective detail had expressed concern over the security arrangements in place, but their requests were reportedly ignored.
In a new twist to this already alarming story, Senator Josh Hawley posted damning information from a whistleblower on Tuesday. The whistleblower claims that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel assigned to protect Trump at the Butler rally had received only a “two-hour online webinar” as their training before taking on this critical security role.
Here is a copy of the letter.

In his letter, Senator Hawley shared the whistleblower’s testimony, stating: “Whistleblower allegations to my office report that the only training received by many HSI agents reassigned to work protective details is a single two-hour webinar on Microsoft Teams featuring pre-recorded videos… These videos were not substantive, and their playback was frequently riddled with technical mishaps leaving the HSI agents ill-prepared for the protective mission to which they were newly assigned.”
This stunning revelation highlights the apparent disregard for the safety of the former president. Requests for additional security were not only denied, but the personnel who were assigned were woefully underprepared for such a high-stakes situation.
The combination of denied security requests and the poor preparation of DHS personnel has led many to question whether this attack could have been prevented. Trump’s security detail was reportedly left vulnerable, and Crooks was able to exploit this glaring gap in protection.

As Senator Hawley noted, the DHS’s refusal to provide adequate security agents, coupled with the insufficient training of those who were assigned, represents a disturbing failure. He emphasized the need for accountability in the aftermath of this preventable tragedy. “This is a shocking development,” Hawley remarked, pointing to the systemic negligence that left former President Trump exposed to an assassin’s bullets.
The public and Trump’s supporters are now demanding answers. Who within the DHS allowed such inadequate training for agents tasked with protecting a former president? Why were repeated requests for additional security dismissed? And how did Crooks manage to position himself so close to Trump without being stopped?
These troubling questions are likely to persist as investigations continue. For now, the rally in Butler serves as a chilling reminder of what can happen when security measures fall short, and those responsible for protecting national figures fail to take necessary precautions.
The situation is still developing, and many await further details as pressure mounts on the DHS and other agencies to explain the breakdown in security that allowed this terrifying event to occur. For now, one thing is clear: this attack could have been avoided, and the American people deserve to know why it wasn’t.
