Health officials in Oregon verify a case of the bubonic plague in the state.

The ill person most likely contracted the plague from a sick cat.

“All close contacts of the resident and their pet have been contacted and provided medication to prevent illness,” said in a press release Deschutes County Health Officer Dr. Richard Fawcett.

According to Deschutes County, the epidemic usually first affects people. “Two to eight days after exposure to an infected animal or flea.”

Symptoms include chills, a high fever, nausea, swelling lymph nodes, weakness, and muscular pains.
