Harris then went on to explain the pride her neighbors took in maintaining their lawns, drawing an unusual connection between well-maintained yards and the dignity of the American people. “You know, I grew up in a neighborhood of folks who were very proud of their lawn, you know. And I was raised to believe and to know that all people deserve dignity. And that we as Americans have a beautiful character,” she rambled, steering the conversation away from the specific issue of affordability.
The Vice President’s remarks left much to be desired for those hoping to hear concrete steps to tackle the challenges of record inflation and sky-high interest rates, both of which have been major burdens for American families throughout the Biden-Harris administration. Her focus on lawns as a symbol of dignity didn’t address the urgent financial strain many Americans are feeling.

When she did attempt to pivot back to the topic of the economy, Harris mentioned the idea of an “opportunity economy,” which she linked to supporting small businesses. Yet, her explanation lacked the detailed policy proposals many expected to hear. “So when I talk about building an opportunity economy, it is very much with the mind of investing in the ambitions and aspirations and the incredible work ethic of the American people and creating opportunity for people, for example, to start a small business,” Harris stated, without offering specifics on how this vision would be implemented.
This is not the first time Harris has offered vague solutions to critical economic issues. In a previous speech in North Carolina, she suggested federal restrictions on “price gouging” as a way to lower food and grocery costs. However, this proposal was met with criticism from across the political spectrum, with many arguing it would lead to higher prices and shortages, rather than the intended relief for consumers.
Critics were quick to point out that Harris’s economic proposals, particularly regarding taxes, could have harmful consequences. Kevin O’Leary, star of Shark Tank and chairman of O’Leary Ventures, recently weighed in on Harris’s tax policies, warning that they could severely damage the U.S. economy by stifling capital growth and hurting small businesses.
“Taxes will go up with their proposals,” O’Leary said in a Thursday interview with FOX Business. “She’s admitting that she’s not denying it. That’s a debate that’s going on in terms of the classic, ‘make the rich pay their fair share.’” O’Leary expressed concerns that Harris’s tax hikes would hinder economic growth and make the U.S. less competitive globally.
One of the most controversial elements of Harris’s tax plan is her proposal to raise the corporate tax rate to 28%, a move O’Leary said would make the U.S. “uncompetitive” in the global market. “That, at her proposed 28%, would put the U.S. economy in an uncompetitive position,” he warned. “The last time we did this to ourselves, we started to see dislocation of headquarters moving to places like Ireland and other lower tax jurisdictions. That, we shouldn’t do. That’s a mistake for either party. That’s a huge mistake.”
O’Leary further cautioned that raising taxes on corporations and wealthy households would not just hurt businesses but also trickle down to everyday Americans in the form of higher costs and fewer job opportunities. “That’s, to me, the most horrific outcome, and I’m very nervous about that,” he added.
As the 2024 election approaches, Harris’s failure to clearly articulate a plan to address the nation’s economic woes raises questions about her ability to lead on these critical issues. While her reflections on middle-class values and lawns might resonate with some, they do little to reassure the millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet. For now, it seems the Vice President is offering more rhetoric than real solutions to the challenges at hand.
