The postcard read:

“Thank you for supporting Kamala! We are so appreciative of you putting out a yard sign. But now we need your continued help. We will be moving a family of 2 from the country of NICARAGUA into your home on 10/30/2024. They will need food, toiletries, and transportation. Thank you.”

In California’s Fresno County, similar letters were reportedly sent to multiple households displaying “Harris-Walz” yard signs. According to News Nation, the letters suggested that these homes had been chosen as “sanctuary residences” for illegal immigrants, escalating concerns among residents.

The letters, printed in English, Spanish, and Arabic, warned that as long as the yard signs remained up, their homes would be identified as “sanctuary residences” for migrant families. The incident is now under investigation by the FBI and Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

“Somebody drove around our neighborhood, jotted down all of the street addresses that had Harris signs in their yards, and sent them this letter,” shared Carole Laval, a Democrat voter in Fresno County. She described the letters as invasive and intimidating.

“To receive something like this, it’s un-American,” Laval said. “We’re exercising our right to free speech. This is not right.”

Another supporter, Michele Richtel, was similarly rattled by the mailing. Far from being intimidated, however, Richtel expressed determination to keep displaying her support. “I was angry. And it’s not deterring me from taking down my signs. I came down here to buy more signs,” Richtel declared, standing by her right to show her political stance.

The postcards and letters have sparked widespread discussions online, with reactions ranging from shock to outright anger. Supporters feel their personal boundaries have been crossed and are questioning the intentions behind the letters. Some speculate that the mailings are part of an orchestrated stunt meant to shame Democrats who advocate for open-border policies while possibly being reluctant to host migrants themselves.

The incident comes amid heightened national debates on immigration policies. As migrant numbers rise, Republican-led states have often pushed for sanctuary cities to accommodate incoming migrants, calling on cities with supportive policies to match their stance with action. This situation appears to place Harris’s supporters in a unique position: the very individuals advocating for open-border policies are now being asked to extend their support in a very personal way.

Local authorities have not yet identified who is responsible for sending the mail, and investigations are ongoing. As these letters make their rounds, they leave recipients caught between supporting their political values and managing an unforeseen, direct request to aid migrant families in their own homes.
