The controversy centered on a claim that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had shared classified intelligence within a Signal group chat that included National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and left-wing journalist Jeffrey Goldberg. The media ran with the narrative that Goldberg, who was accidentally added to the chat, had allegedly received sensitive war plans from Hegseth. However, this so-called scandal fell apart almost as quickly as it began.
