A routine shoplifting call at an Ohio Walmart nearly turned into a cold blooded execution of a police officer. Surveillance and body camera footage now show just how close this country came to another tragedy that would have rocked law enforcement nationwide.
Instead of another fallen officer, Americans witnessed what many are calling nothing short of a miracle.
The terrifying incident unfolded Thursday afternoon inside a Walmart on Atlantic Boulevard NE in Canton, Ohio. Around 1:45 p.m., a Canton Police Department officer responded to a call involving suspected theft. What should have been a routine interaction quickly escalated into a life or death moment.
Police say the officer escorted two suspects, 21 year old Shane Newman and 23 year old Katerina Jeffrey, to the store’s loss prevention office. The pair appeared compliant at first. Then, without warning, the situation exploded into violence.
Inside the small room, Newman suddenly produced a firearm. According to investigators, he raised the gun, aimed it directly at the officer’s head, and pulled the trigger.
