The 71-year-old senator had been traveling and conducting meetings just one day earlier, including a high-profile visit to Kyiv where he discussed efforts to increase pressure on Moscow through additional sanctions.
During that trip, Graham publicly outlined plans to return to Washington and push congressional leaders to advance legislation aimed at giving President Donald Trump additional leverage in dealing with Russia and the war in Ukraine.
“When I get back to Washington, I’m gonna go with Sen. [Richard] Blumenthal to the Republican and Democratic leader, to see if we can find time to move this Russian sanctions package that will give tools to President Trump to help end this war,” Graham said during remarks in Ukraine.
Less than 24 hours later, the veteran lawmaker was gone.
President Donald Trump confirmed the news in a statement posted to Truth Social, expressing sadness over the loss of one of his longtime political allies.
“Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead!
“He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!”
The senator’s family later released a brief statement requesting privacy while thanking Americans for their prayers and support during the difficult time.
According to reports from NBC News, emergency personnel responded to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence Saturday night after receiving a call involving a possible cardiac arrest.
Police scanner audio reportedly indicated a medical emergency at the home. News photographers at the scene captured images showing paramedics moving an individual from the residence on a stretcher before transporting the person by ambulance.
Multiple emergency vehicles, including police and fire units, were seen outside the property as first responders worked the scene.
Staff members close to Graham told reporters that there had been no indication the senator was suffering from any serious health concerns prior to the incident.
His death came as a shock to many in Washington because he maintained an active public schedule and continued making media appearances, traveling internationally, and participating in major policy discussions.
Graham was even scheduled to appear Sunday morning on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” a program where he had become one of the network’s most frequent political guests over the years.
At the time of his death, Graham was serving as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was campaigning for what would have been his fifth six-year term representing South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
Tributes quickly poured in from political leaders both in the United States and abroad.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune remembered Graham as a committed defender of American interests and democratic allies around the world.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster praised the senator’s relentless commitment to his state and country, describing him as a tireless fighter and loyal friend.
Because South Carolina law requires an appointment when a Senate vacancy occurs, McMaster will now select a temporary replacement to serve until January 3, 2027. The governor has not yet announced who will fill the position.
The timing of Graham’s death also creates immediate political implications. He had recently secured the Republican nomination for another Senate term, meaning state Republicans must now choose a new nominee ahead of the November election.
International leaders also honored Graham’s legacy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reflected on their years of cooperation and praised the senator’s support for Ukraine throughout the conflict with Russia.
“Lindsey was a true defender of freedom and of the values that make our world safer,” Zelenskyy said.
“We were in constant dialogue, which I will miss.”
Zelenskyy noted that Graham had visited Ukraine multiple times since the Russian invasion began and remained actively involved in efforts to support the country.
“in recent weeks he worked on important initiatives that could help bring peace closer, including strengthening sanctions against Russia.”
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also praised Graham’s commitment to the alliance and his work supporting Ukraine’s defense.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu similarly paid tribute, highlighting Graham’s longstanding support for America, Israel, and the broader Western alliance.
