According to Axios, House Republicans saw their highest fundraising totals of the cycle when Mike Johnson (R-LA) was named House Speaker. During the drawn-out Speaker election process, supporters of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) were drawn to his extraordinary fundraising abilities.
Since Johnson was elected last Wednesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has generated over $1 million in funds online, marking its most successful week to date, according to NRCC spokesperson Jack Pandol.

Pandol disclosed that the bulk of the cash raised were linked to Johnson’s name. Furthermore, according to Politico’s analysis, around this time, the number of online fundraising and donor signups reached its highest point in the previous 18 months on a single day.
“House Republicans are enjoying a digital cash geyser under Speaker Mike Johnson. The NRCC is racing to capture this enthusiasm and raise the resources to grow our House majority,” Pandol told Axios.
Despite continuous discussions among House Republicans regarding a new leader, moderate Republicans firmly backed McCarthy because of his extraordinary fundraising skills. House conservatives, however, expressed disapproval of McCarthy’s spending choices, pointing out that a substantial sum of money was utilized to undermine America First candidates such as Joe Kent and Karoline Leavitt.
Before the 2022 midterm elections, Republicans manage to secure a small majority despite unprecedented fundraising. Pickups occur in blue-leaning districts in California and New York, and candidates for America First accuse McCarthy of sabotaging their campaigns.
Democrats are aiming to brand Johnson as a “MAGA Republican” who embraces “radical stances” on social topics, such as same-sex marriage and abortion.

“He is a rare and volatile combination of unvetted [and] conservative talk show host. He actually has years of material, freestyle right-wing rhetoric, that nobody has looked under the hood on,” Axios was informed by a Democratic strategist.
