Republican representative from Ohio Jim Jordan has formally entered the crowded field to succeed ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, was ousted as Speaker of the House in a historic vote. This is the first time in recorded history that a speaker has been fired. McCarthy was defeated by a 216-210 margin in the vote, which saw eight Republicans vote with the Democrats.
McCarthy has formally declared that he won’t run for re-election to the post.
“I will not run for speaker again. I’ll have the [Republican] conference pick somebody else,” McCarthy told reporters after being removed from his seat, according to NBC News.
He was elected House Speaker in just nine months following a tough 15-round vote marathon.
Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a Republican, joined a small group of McCarthy’s GOP friends in rejecting his bid for the speakership.
Taking the initiative to successfully remove McCarthy from office on Tuesday, Gaetz charged him of favoring Democratic appeasement in the House above conservative principles.
Patrick McHenry, a representative from North Carolina, fills in as temporary speaker while a permanent replacement for McCarthy is sought.
Jordan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, is thinking about running for speaker.
Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky recently shared an item on social media. He declared Jordan to be the best contender to succeed McCarthy in his role.

Gaetz replied to Massie’s tweet in agreement.
According to Scott Wong of NBC News, Jordan declares his candidacy and confirms his bid for office.
Politico confirmed a rumor that Louisiana Republican Rep. Steve Scalise is also thinking about running for president.
According to Fox News commentator Sean Hannity, former President Donald Trump is open to the idea of becoming House Speaker. This likelihood becomes more likely as more Republicans declare their determination to put him up for the nomination.
